The Shelby Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), held its June meeting on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at Emmy’s Restaurant in Shelbyville. Following devotion by Chaplain Aurelia Swann (which included singing the National Anthem) Chapter Regent Betty Brown opened the meeting with the ritual.
After lunch, the members enjoyed a program dedicated to the flag of the United States of America, as Flag Day had just been celebrated on June 14. First, 6-year-old Nico Higgs of Bedford County read a few remarks about the flag, and then he played Reveille on the bugle. He also passed out hand flags, scarves decorated with flags, and fans. David Sliger presented a program on the U.S. flag as far back as its beginning. Mr. Sliger, a native of Bedford County and a former Marine, was most informative and an enjoyable speaker. His wife, Judy, accompanied him to the meeting.
The chapter conducted its necessary business, and then Regent Brown installed the new chapter officers for the 2025-2028 term. Officers are Maureen Garrett, Regent; Melissa Edwards, Vice Regent; Sherry Sorrells; Second Vice Regent; Aurelia Swann, Chaplain; Marie Parsons, Recording Secretary; Teresa Gill, Treasurer; and Lee Travis Registrar. Following the installation, Past Regent Brown presented Regent Garrett with the chapter gavel and the chapter regent pin for her insignia ribbon. Scott Garrett, husband of the new regent, and Jim Brown, husband of the past regent, were also guests.
