Nick Johnson made a living working the hot corner for the Shelbyville Central Golden Eagles.
As an anchor for the Eagle infield, he eventually worked his way on several colleges’ radar.
That hard work led to his signing with LaGrange College, located in LaGrange, Georgia.
“I was trying to figure out where I was going. It was kind of stressful. They (LaGrange) reached out to me. There were a few, but they reached out to me and really caught my eye mid-way through the season. As soon as I visited, I knew it was a place I wanted to be,” Johnson said.
Johnson has been one of the key components for the Eagles over the past few seasons, highlighted by a trip to the Class 4A state sectional in 2023.
That run by the Eagles was one of Johnson’s favorite memories playing in an Eagle uniform.
“Going to sub-state with that team last year. It was a really fun trip, especially with the season we had the year before,” he said.
It’s been a life-long dream of Johnson to reach the collegiate level and as of this past spring, he’s put pen to paper and made it official.
“It was something I was thrown into when I was four to get a little social. As soon as I started playing, I loved it. I’ve just stuck with it ever since,” he said.
During the summer months, it’s not been a heavy regiment of workouts or hitting the gym, but rather just playing travel ball and enjoying one last summer before beginning his college career.
“I’m playing travel ball and then I’ll be over there in August,” he said.
LaGrange College is a NCAA Division III school that competes in the Collegiate Conference of the South.
During the 2024 season, went 26-17 overall.
Johnson expects to debut with the JV team and fight for a spot on the varsity lineup.
“I’m going to have to earn my spot. I like to play third, but if there’s another position I can play, I’m all for it,” he said.
Johnson plans on pursuing a degree in civil engineering.
