SHELBYVILLE — In a total dominant effort, Shelbyville Central’s Golden Eagles rolled past visiting Franklin County 42-0 in a Region 5-5A matchup on Thursday night in difficult weather conditions.
“This is a good region win in very tough weather to play in,” Shelbyville Central coach Jud Dryden said.
“We played well in all three phases of the game and that’s a good thing.”
It was the second-straight shutout for the Golden Eagle defense while Shelbyville Central’s offense shined as well.
Franklin County only had 110 yards of total offense, 10 rushing and 100 passing. Shelbyville Central’s defense allowed only four first downs.
The Golden Eagle offense racked up 302 yards of offense, 185 rushing and 167 in the air.
Junior Robert Bailey went over 1,000 rushing yards on the season after gaining 175 yards on 17 carries.
Mason Shavers connected on 9-of-13 passes for 167 yards.
“Mason (Shavers) did a great job in his first start at quarterback this season. Steven Bobo was out due to an injury and Mason stepped up and did what we knew he could do,” Dryden said.
“Robert (Bailey) had another big game and the defense got another great shutout.”
The Golden Eagles scored the lone touchdown in the opening quarter, a 39-yard touchdown pass from Shavers to Labron Ransom.
Ben Betzelberger was a perfect 6-for-6 on extra-points as Shelbyville took an early 7-0 lead.
Bailey took over the game from that point, scoring three-straight touchdowns, two in the second quarter and one in the third.
He scored on a 4-yard run then closed out the half with a 48-yard run as Shelbyville Central posted a 21-0 halftime advantage.
Bailey’s third rushing TD covered 56 yards racing past defenders midway through the third quarter increasing the lead to 28-0.
Sophomore Nate Zimmerman found the end zone on a nice 23 yard run that put the Golden Eagles up 35 points, allowing a running clock from that point.
Shavers connected with Xzayvier Jordan on a 71 yard TD pass at the 5:35 mark of the fourth quarter to close out the scoring.
Defensively, the Golden Eagle defense forced three turnovers, with Anthony Jones and Brody Lovvorn each recording an interception, and Zion Bonner added a fumble recovery.
Shelbyville will be back on the grid iron on October 11 at Spring Hill.
