SHELBYVILLE — Trailing by double-digits after three quarters, Shelbyville Central’s Golden Eagles outscored Columbia Central 20 points in the fourth quarter to claim 34-24 win in a key Region 5-5A matchup at the Eagles Nest on Friday night.
Sophomore quarterback Steven Bobo scored on runs of 25 and two yards, while senior linebacker Brody Lovvorn intercepted a pass in the closing seconds of the game to secure the victory.
“We have the mindset that as long as there is time on the clock we have a chance,” Shelbyville Central coach Jud Dryden said.
“This team has a lot of grit and they don’t quit. That’s how they play.”
The Lions (2-2, 0-1) took control of the game early, scoring a touchdown in the first quarter off a Justis Haggard 22-yard run then added a TD midway through the second stanza on a 13-yard run.
Luis Gonzalez was perfect in the game on extra-point attempts for the 14-0 lead.
Shelbyville Central (3-1, 1-0) responded with back-to-back touchdowns to even the score at 14-all at halftime.
Robert Bailey found the end zone on a 16-yard run followed by Steven Bobo’s 76-yard run.
Ben Betzelberger connected on both kicks after.
The third quarter was dominated by Columbia Central as the Lions added a Daniel Booker 27-yard TD run and a Gonzalez 30 yard field goal to go up 24-14.
Shelbyville Central retook control of the game in the four quarter, highlighted by well-executed onside kick off the foot of Betzelber and recovered by William Bobo that set up the game-winning touchdown.
“Everybody in the stadium knew we were gonna onside kick so we decided to do a little chip shot instead of the tradition onside attempt. It work for us and set us up for what prove to be game-winning score,” Dryden said.
Five plays later Steven Bobo rushed into the end zone.
“A great come-from-behind win that puts us in good shape in the region. We still have a lot of games to play and still need to improve,” Dryden said. “The coaching staff and players did a really good job of making adjustments throughout the game and that was a huge difference.”
Steven Bobo turned in a fine performance, rushing for 129 yards on 11 carries while passing for 132 yards, completing 7-of-13 attempts with one interception.
Bailey rushed for 74 yards on 18 touches.
“It’s nice to have so many different guys that can lead us on offense. It was our quarterback this game. Steven made some big plays,” Dryden said.
