UNIONVILLE — While Fayetteville City lit it up from the perimeter to the tune of 12 made 3-pointers in the season-opener at Community, it was the one-two punch of Anna Haskisn and Mattie Maxey who combined for 38 points to lead the Viqueens to the 56-49 win over the Lady Tigers on Tuesday night.
Fayetteville’s Te’Asia Ewing flashed the hot hand from the arc in the first frame, drilling four made 3-pointers to spur on a 17-point frame.
While Community mustered up 10 points, it was a 16-9 run in the second period that allowed the Viqueens to tie the game by halftime at 26.
As part of a 19-point third, Haskins and Maxey combined for 15 points in the third as Community took a commanding 45-34 lead after three quarters.
The Lady Tigers mustered up a 15-point frame in the fourth, but Community countered and was able to close out with 11 points.
Haskins led all scorers with 20 points, while Maxey added 18.
Ewing led the visitors with 19 points.
In addition to seven made treys, the Viqueens shot an extremely efficient 11-of-12 tries from the 3-point line.
Community will hit the road on Friday and travel to Santa Fe for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
