UNIONVILLE — The Community Vikings kept their hot start to the district schedule rolling on Tuesday evening, crushing Grundy County 13-3 on the heels of a massive fifth frame.
Sophomore Kaleb Maillet twirled a gem for the Vikes, going the distance and allowing just three runs, only one of which was earned, on three hits while striking out seven batters.
It was a slow grind of offense for the Purple and Gold that saw Grundy County grab a 1-0 lead in the top of the second.
Community finally got on the board in the bottom of the third when Brody Armstrong scored the first Viking run of the night on a Grundy County error.
Wesley Haley later scored a second run in the inning on a passed ball, giving the Vikings a 2-1 lead after three.
After Maillet sat the Yellow Jackets down in order in the fourth, Community played add on thanks to another Grundy County error and scored a third run of the game.
Things got interesting as Grundy County rallied for two in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game.
And then the dam burst.
Cash Davis and Dylan Markum both singled to lead off the inning and Elijah Westbrooks reached via walk to put three on, bringing Josh Powers to the plate.
Poewrs settled in and crushed a two-run double to deep left field, scoring Westbrooks and courtesy runner Ollie Blanton.
Community got four more singles in the inning, the last of which again came from Powers that singled home a 10th run of the frame to reach the 10-run rule limit and give the Vikings their third District 9-2A win of the season.
Powers went 2-for-2 and scored two runs and drove in three to lead the Purple and Gold at the plate.
Davis and Tyler Wood both also had two-hit nights as well.
