UNIONVILLE — Community built a five-point lead by halftime on Friday night against Macon County, but a slow start to the second half was more than the Purple and Gold could overcome in a 51-40 loss to the Tigers.
Out of the gate, it was a close first frame that saw Macon County post an 11-10 lead following the first eight minutes, thanks to four points from both Braydon Marshall and McKade Mix.
Charlie Haskins led the charge for Community in the first with a pair of shots, while Landon Berman, Landon Lovvorn and Austin Stickler each knocked down baskets.
Despite trailing by one, Community surged to a 27-22 halftime lead on the back of Lovvorn, who added seven more, including a 3-pointer.
Berman and Stickler also both knocked down a pair of baskets in the frame.
While the Vikings held a two-possession lead, the ball simply wouldn’t go in the basket in the third period, as Macon County took off on a 14-2 tear through the quarter to retake the lead they didn’t give up.
Although the Vikings rallied for 11 in the fourth, it was more than Community could overcome in the final minutes as Macon County held on for the 11-point win.
In the decisive fourth, Macon County’s Cason Gregory scored eight of his 15 total points, but the biggest difference in the game came at the free throw line.
Community shot just three free throws and finished 0-for-3 on the night, compared to Macon County’s 12-of-18 night—all of which came in the fourth quarter.
