COALMONT — A rough first innings was ultimately more than Community could overcome, despite a late-game rally, in a 13-5 loss at Grundy County on Wednesday.
Plagued by errors and a tough start on the mound by Wesley Haley, Grundy County pounced on Community and plated eight runs in the first inning.
That 8-0 lead held through three innings until the Vikings responded with a big inning of their own.
Community connected on five hits including a double by Dylan Markum as the Vikings chipped well into the Yellow Jacket lead.
Logan Reed put the Vikings on the board with a two RBI single and Tyler Wood followed with a line drive to center field, plating tow more runs.
Kaleb Maillet tacked on a fifth run on a RBI single to left.
Despite cutting the lead to three, Grundy County responded with a three-spot in the fifth and then two more in the sixth for the final margin of victory.
Although Haley struggled on the first inning on the mound, he answered in a big way at the plate, going 3-for-4, while Reed went 1-for-2 with a pair of RBIs to his credit.
Haley went 4 2/3 innings on the mound, giving up 11 hits and eight runs while striking out five.
Reed and Ryan Sharp worked the final 1 1/3 innings in relief.
