UNIONVILLE — From the outset, Tuesday night’s soccer match between the Community Viqueens and Middle TN Golden Eagles appeared to pit two evenly-matched teams.
When the clock hit zero, the final score was indicative of the makeup of the teams as the Viqueens settled for a 2-2 tie in Community’s season opener.
There was no shortage of scoring opportunities as the teams looked to gain the upper hand in the first half.
The Viqueens were the aggressors for the first 20 minutes but could not score as the Golden Eagles kept Community off the scoreboard.
The momentum changed as Middle TN peppered the Viqueen goal in a span of 10 seconds as the Golden Eagles drilled a shot off the crossbar and then off the left post.
The Golden Eagles finally broke the ice and scored the only goal of the half in the 28th minute as a shot barely went over the goal line after a deflection from the keeper as Middle TN took a 1-0 lead to the intermission.
The Viqueens came out in the second half and tied the game as Stevie Dickenson found the back of the net.
Community followed on its momentum with a goal in the 71st minute as Sara Flannagan scored off an assist from Audrina Bearden to give the Viqueens a 2-1 lead.
It looked like the Viqueens would chalk up the victory, but the Golden Eagles scored a late goal in the 79th minute to tie the game at 2-2. Community threatened with a shot in the waning seconds that missed the mark as the game ended in a deadlock.
Community will travel to Webb for its second match of the season next Tuesday.
