CHAPEL HILL — After losing their opening game of the Region 5-2A baseball tournament to Lewis County 2-0 the night before, the Community Vikings could not get their offense untracked as the Vikings could only muster four hits and fell to the Summertown Eagles 5-0 Saturday and were eliminated from the tourney.
Community, the home team in the contest, looked to break the ice in the second inning.
With one out, Kaleb Maillet singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Dylan Markum.
A single by Isaiah Beech could only advance the runner to third before a strikeout ended the threat.
The Eagles scored on an unearned run in the third inning as a single, stolen base, error, and sacrifice fly gave Summertown a 1-0 advantage.
Another threat by the Vikings came up empty in the fourth.
Singles by Case Davis and Maillet put runners at first and third with one out, but the runner was thrown out at third following an unsuccessful bunt attempt as the Eagles held on to their lead.
Summertown used a sacrifice and two hits, including an RBI-single to add a run in the fifth and upped its lead to 2-0.
Two walks and a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth added another Eagle run as Summertown went up 3-0.
The Eagles finished their scoring by adding two insurance runs in the seventh. After a lead-off single, an RBI-triple and a run-scoring single drove in the runs as Summertown went up 5-0.
Meanwhile, the Vikings went down in order in each of their final three at-bats as the Community postseason play came to an end.
Maillet’s two singles led the Viking 4-hit attack.
Wes Haley started on the mound for the Vikings with Maillet in relief in the sixth inning.
Community, with no seniors on the roster, finished the season with an 18-17 record.
