CLARKSVILLE — After falling behind in the first half on Thursday night at non-region opponent Clarksville, Shelbyville Central orchestrated a furious second-half rally, but in the end, couldn’t come up with enough offense to overcome the early deficit and fell 28-19.
After a scoreless first quarter, Clarksville grabbed all the game’s momentum with a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter, the first of which came on a nine-yard run by Jamarcus Watkins, but the kick after failed, leaving the score at 6-0.
Later in the second period, Avare Gallbreath took a one-yard plunge into the end zone.
Having missed the earlier PAT, Clarksville went for two and Gallbreath again came through on the conversion attempt to make it a 14-0 Clarksville lead by halftime.
Although the Golden Eagles failed to break into the end zone in the first half and the Clarksville defense keying on starting tailback Robert Bailey, it was junior quarterback Stephen Bobo who put Shelbyville on the board.
Mid-way through the third period, Bobo found a crease and streaked 56 yards to paydirt for the first Golden Eagle score of the night, but the kick after failed, leaving it a 14-6 Clarksville lead.
Hoping to catch the hosts by surprise, Shelbyville opted for an onside kick on the ensuing possession, but Clarksville was able to recover near mid-field.
While the first three quarters felt like an offensive grind for both teams, the fourth quarter featured plenty of fireworks for both teams.
Watkins found the end zone for the second time on the night, scoring on a five-yard run early in the fourth to give Clarksville a 21-6 lead.
Bobo struck back and scored on a 45-yard jaunt, but again the two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving it 21-12.
Things got interesting late in the game when Shelbyville cut the lead to just two points after Bailey finally broke loose and scored from 13 yards out.
Reager Edwards successful kick after made it a 21-19 Clarksville lead.
Hoping to catch Clarksville off guard, the Golden Eagles attempted another onside kick, but again saw the Wildcats recover with prime starting field position.
Shortly after, Gallbreath scored his third touchdown of the night on a 29-yard dash to the end zone for the insurance score.
In total, Shelbyville cranked out 375 yards of offense.
Bobo completed 10-of-20 attempts for 168 yards, but was intercepted once in the fourth quarter.
He totaled 128 rushing yards on seven carries and notched a pair of touchdowns, while Bailey totaled 79 yards on 18 touches and a score as well.
Edwards was the top target for Bobo, making a pair of catches for 51 yards, while Jack Conditt had 49 yards on three receptions.
Shelbyville will return home on Friday and will host Ravenwood in a Region 6-6A contest.
