UNIONVILLE — The Community Viqueens took a 10-point lead in the third quarter and after missed free throws helped the Clay County Lady Dawgs get back in the game and force overtime, Community took the lead in the extra four minutes and held on for a 47-42 win over the Lady Dawgs in a basketball contest Friday night.
Alyssa White scored four points while Brooklyn Yoes, Anna Haskins, and Savannah Pearson each connected for a trey as Community (6-4) took the early lead in the opening quarter.
The Viqueens led 11-6 before settling on a 13-10 advantage heading to the second quarter.
The Viqueens increased their lead to 16-10 after a trey by Morgan Pridmore to start the quarter, but the Lady Dawgs stayed close as Community took a 21-19 lead into halftime.
Yoes drilled two three-pointers and scored eight points in the third quarter as the Viqueens used an 8-0 run to take their biggest at 31-21 with 3:20 left.
Clay County came back to score seven of the last nine points as Community took a 33-28 lead to the fourth quarter.
After Community reached the bonus with 6:12 left, the Viqueens went to the foul line often but could only connect on 4-of-12 free throws in the quarter.  Meanwhile, the Lady Dawgs tied the game at 39-39 as Ella Eads connected on a field goal with 10 seconds left to bring on overtime.
Two free throws by White with 3:26 remaining in the extra frame gave the Viqueens the lead for good.
Community was only 4-of-10 from the stripe in the overtime, but the Viqueen defense held the Lady Dawgs to three points as the Viqueens escaped with the win.
Yoes had 13 points to lead the Viqueens.
Eads had 18 points while Natalie Smith added 14 to lead the Lady Dawgs.
The Viqueens were 8-of-22 at the free throw line but finished with seven treys.
Clay County was 10-of-11 at the line.
“Having to go to overtime was not great in that situation because if we just hit free throws we win by 8 to 10 points,” Coach Cody Pierce of the Viqueens said.
“Great defensive night and for the most part we took care of the ball except there at the end a couple of bad turnovers we’ve got to clean up,” Pierce added.  “Ugly win but it’s a win.”
