Bedford County Schools (BCS) is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Jennifer Cook as the new principal of Community Middle School. She will be stepping into the role following the retirement of Mr. Tony Garrette, who has faithfully served as principal for the past 12 years.
A lifelong resident of Bedford County and an experienced educator and leader, Dr. Cook brings deep roots, unwavering passion and a student-centered philosophy to her new role.
“We are excited to welcome Dr. Cook as the new principal of Community Middle School,” said Superintendent Dr. Tammy Garrett. “She brings a strong background in academics and instruction along with a deep commitment to public education. Her student-centered approach, genuine kindness and dedication to instructional excellence make her an ideal fit for our school community. We look forward to the positive impact she will have on both students and staff.”
“I am excited to serve as the next principal of Community Middle School and to continue being a part of the Bedford County Schools family,” said Dr. Cook. “Bedford County is home. I was born and raised here, and my passion for education started at an early age.”
Before entering the field of education, she worked alongside her father in the insurance industry, gaining valuable experience in communication, relationship-building and problem-solving. Her teaching career began at Eakin Elementary, where she taught kindergarten. She continued gaining experience at both Cascade Elementary and Liberty School teaching second grade and kindergarten before spending seven years teaching 5th grade at Cascade Elementary. She later transitioned into administration at Cascade Middle School serving as the assistant principal. She also spent several years coaching middle school cheerleading.
Dr. Cook holds a bachelor’s degree in Child and Family Studies from Freed-Hardeman University. She later earned a master’s degree, an Educational Specialist Degree, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Trevecca Nazarene University.
Her educational philosophy is grounded in the belief that strong relationships are the foundation of a successful school community.
“Education is the foundation of opportunity, shaping futures and opening doors to success,” Cook said. “I am dedicated to creating an environment where every student and educator can grow, thrive and achieve success. Although cliché, I believe that strong relationships are at the heart of an effective school community.”
As she steps into her new role, Dr. Cook is looking forward to building new connections. “I am most excited about building meaningful relationships with the students, teachers and families of Community Middle School,” she said. “Together, we have the opportunity to cultivate a culture of growth, collaboration and excellence.”
She also acknowledges the challenges ahead. “Striking the right balance between academic growth, student well-being and a positive school culture requires intentionality, adaptability and teamwork. It’s about creating an environment where students feel safe, supported and motivated to learn, while teachers feel empowered to innovate and inspire.”
For Dr. Cook, leading at Community Middle is a deeply personal and professional milestone. “I was attracted to this position because I believe in the potential of our students and the power of a supportive, engaging school culture. Community Middle School has a strong foundation deeply rooted in a sense of belonging and school pride. Go, Vikings!”
Bedford County Schools is proud to welcome Dr. Cook to this new leadership position and looks forward to the continued growth and success of Community Middle School under her guidance.
Outside of school, Dr. Cook enjoys spending time with her husband, Michael, and their daughter, Caroline. Their family cheers passionately for the Tennessee Vols and the MTSU Lady Raiders, loves visiting the beach, and finds joy and meaning in church life, reading and journaling.
