UNIONVILLE — The Community Viking bench accounted for 49 points as the Vikings scored early and often and drilled 15 treys in an 88-41 victory over the Huntland Hornets Friday night.
“They (the bench) came in with a lot of intensity defensively and were ready when their number was called,” Coach Hunter Ferrell of the Vikings said.
With Charlie Haskins, Masyn Hill, and Andrew Tocchio each scoring eight points, Community (10-5) extended its lead by scoring the final 12 points of the opening quarter and took a 28-9 advantage to the second quarter.
Hill led the way with five points as the Vikings scored the first eight points to complete a 20-0 run as Community led 36-9 with 5:11 left.
The Vikings cooled off a bit the remaining of the quarter as Community took a 41-22 lead to the intermission.
With good ball movement throughout the third quarter, the Vikings put up 30 points as nine Community players netted points.
Jaxson Williams, Hill, and Tacchio each scored five points as the Vikings outscored the Hornets 30-13 to take a commanding 71-35 lead to the final quarter.
It was a running clock in the quarter, but that didn’t stop Boone Gray from racking up a lot of points for the Vikings.
The freshman scored the final 13 Viking points, including three treys as Community took the non-district win.
“When it comes to a zone, we just talk about making sure the ball doesn’t stick too much,” Ferrell said.
“For the most part, the guys were pretty unselfish,” Ferrell added. “They enjoy seeing the team score and not so much thinking about who scores.”
“It kind of showed that when we were able to get some reversals and were able in the second half to get it to the paint a little more,” Ferrell said.
Hill scored 20 points off the bench to lead four Vikings in double figures. Tocchio had 16 points while Gray came off the bench to score 13.
Haskins added 12 points.
Grant Jernigan led the Hornets with 12 points.
To go along with their 15 three-pointers, the Vikings were 13-of-18 at the free throw line.
The Hornets had two treys and were 7-of-13 from the line.
