BELL BUCKLE — It wasn’t the cleanest or sharpest of outings by the Cascade Champions, but in the end, the home team got enough timely hitting to outlast Cornersville 7-6 in a non-district clash on Friday night.
Cornersville jumped on starting pitcher Zach Crosslin and plated three runs in the top of the first.
Trailing 3-0, it was a bases-loaded walk by James Magee that put Cascade on the board.
Despite a second error by the Champions in the second inning, Crosslin settled in and didn’t give up another run.
Two hit batters set up Cascade in the bottom of the inning for senior Sawyer Lovvorn, who drove in a second Champion run when he ground into a fielder’s choice.
Lovvorn later scored when Walker Craig blasted a two-run homer over the center field fence, putting the Champs up 4-3.
While errors plagued Cascade in the early innings, the Champs got two more runs off a Bulldog error in teh bottom of the third, bumping the lead to 6-3.
Although Cornersville got a run back in the top of the fourth, Cascade answered in the bottom of the frame on a Logan Green RBI double that scored Jayden Hathcock, who led off the inning with a double of his own.
Cornersville made things interesting and scored two more runs off a Cascade error in the top of the fifth, but that was as close as the Bulldogs would get at the Champion lead.
Lovvorn and Craig led the Champs with a pair of RBIs to their credit.
Crosslin took the win on the mound, going two innings and allowing three runs on four hits with a strike out.
Conner Melson pitched three innings in relief, and despite giving up two runs on two hits, struck out three.
Dawson Youngblood also pitched two innings and gave up one run on one hit with a strikeout to his credit.
