Champs settle for 2nd in region, fall in sectional

BELL BUCKLE — The Cascade Champion wrestling team took second place in the 5-A dual team tournament and saw the team portion of the season come to a close with a loss on Saturday in the Class A sectional at Station Camp.
In the region, Cascade defeated Cornersville, 39-33, but came up short against Tullahoma, 54-18.
Against the Bulldogs, it was an all-out war between every wrestler that stepped onto the mat.
Hayden Dowell won via forfeit at the 175-pound class, bringing Isaac Chapa and Cornersville’s Xavier Viazcan to the mat in the 190-pound class.
The two duked it out until Viazcan finally gained the upperhand and pinned Chapa with 22 seconds left in the second period.
After the Dawgs tied the match at six apiece, Dylan Warren needed just 10 seconds to pin Chase Kass in the 215-pound class.
Heading into the 120-pound class and the Champs up 18-12, it was Cornersville’s Joshua Bennett that tied the match at 18 with a pin over Terry Pilkington in 1:12.
But after the Bulldogs tied the match at 18, the Champions won the next three matches with Briston Moore and Vayden Moore claiming wins via pin at the 126 and 138 pound classes.
Fender Holden also won via forfeit to put Cascade up 36-18.
But Cornersville simply wouldn’t go away.
Austin King put the Bulldogs back on track with a pin by Austin King and Jonathan Zuniga followed with a victory in the 150-pound class, pinning Cascdae’s Dominic Sanchez.
In the 157-pound class, Landon Kling outlasted Caden Bush in a 6-2 decision, which ultimately was the deciding match.
Following the win over Cornersville, Cascade took a tough one against Tullahoma in the region finals.
The Champs managed just three wins against the Wildcats in the 54-18 loss.
Chapa rebounded from his earlier loss and pinned Tullahoma’s Matthew Swiger in the third period.
Warren recorded his second win of the night and outlasted Chandler Kile in a 3-2 decision.
Vayden Moore gave Cascade it’s only other win of the night in the 138-pound class , pinning Tullahoma’s Kiivon Butler in the first period.
After finishing second in the region, Cascade went on the road to face Station Camp, but saw the team portion of the season come to a close with a 63-10 loss to the Bison.
Dowell, Chapa and Moore gave Cascade the lone wins of the match, with Dowell claiming an 8-0 major decision in the 175-pound class and Chapa claiming a 7-4 decision in the 190-pound class.
Moore also won an 11-5 decision in the 126-pound class.
While the team portion of the season is over, the postseason will continue as Cascade puts several wrestlers in the individual brackets for each weight class.
