It was a solid week on the field for the Golden Eagle soccer team, who crushed Columbia Central 6-0, then battled Coffee County to a 0-0 draw.
Against Columbia, Fernando Gallardo found the back of the net twice, while Emmanuel Leyva, Daniel Torres, Rodrigo Hernandez and Victor Galvan each scored once.
“This is a big rivalry game and our first district game. Historically, Columbia has been very strong. We moved the ball well and we are starting to find our rhythm. We have a long season ahead of us, but this group of guys have big hearts for each other and a hunger to go the distance,” Eagle coach Chris Fritz said.
Following up the huge win at Columbia, the Eagles hosted Coffee County in a defensive struggle.
“They (Coffee Co.) drop most of their team back and force you to play around or through the. We tried some different strategies and hit some shots, but couldn’t find the goal to make them step out of this defensive play,” Fritz said.
“Junior wingback Rodrigo Hernandez was one of our primary ways of creating chances. They relied heavily on counters, but our defense and goalkeeper held them to just four shots.”
