BRENTWOOD — Simply put, offense was a struggle for the Shelbyville Central Golden Eagles, who were missing two key players in Friday night’s Region 6-6A 24-6 loss at Brentwood.
Shelbyville’s defense hung tough through much of the first half, with the Bruins (3-2, 2-0) only grabbing a 7-0 lead by the end of the first period.
The hosts tacked on 10 more points in the second quarter and held a 17-0 lead at the half.
Brentwood got one final touchdown in the second half, but Shelbyville Central (2-3, 2-1) wouldn’t go quietly.
With Robert Bailey and Stephen Bobo sidelined, it fell to the Golden’ Eagles younger players to move the ball.
Quarterback Cy’Onn Rucker took over at quarterback after stepping in just before halftime against Independence last week.
Rucker completed 8-of-20 attempts for 74 yards, with Jack Conditt being the biggest producer in through the pass game, making one catch for 26 yards.
On the ground, Rucker had 32 yards on seven carries, while Torrion Mathis got the bulk of the carries out of the backfield.
He totaled 47 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown in the win.
Defensively, Chandler Jones and Jackson Themm led the Golden Eagles with 4.5 tackles each.
Shelbyville will be back on the road on Friday night, traveling to Summit to face the Spartans at 7 p.m.
