SHELBYVILLE — Shelbyville Central’s Golden Eagle soccer team defeated talented Lincoln County 5-1 in a District 9-3A match at home on Tuesday evening.
“Lincoln was well-coached and played with high intensity,” Shelbyville coach Chris Fritz said. “We were down two of our key players, but the boys stepped up.”
Shelbyville Central scored early from a left-footed rocket from freshman Jonathan Betzelberger in his first-ever start.
Lincoln County came back and tied it up right before the half.
Arael Sanchez had a tap in from a Daniel Torres assist, Kolby Themm scored off a free kick.
Sanchez then hit another goal off of a Rodrigo Hernandez pass and some creative skill in the box to find a side net finish.
The Golden Eagles final goal was a great team play and lay-off from Daniel Torres led to a Victor Galvan shot.
“These boys are everything you want in a team and are fun to coach. I hope we can continue to overcome the adversity we faced tonight with people playing out of position and coming up big,” Fritz said. “Special shout-out to seniors Ricky Juarez and Alex Sebastian for making big plays defensively throughout the entire game.”
Shelbyville Central (2-0-1) returns to action on Thursday night at 6 against Nolensville at home.
