UNIONVILLE — The bats were working early for the Community Vikings as the Vikings stayed within striking distance of the 2-time Class A state champion Eagleville Eagles, but nine Community errors were too much to overcome as the Vikings fell 19-7 in a baseball contest Thursday night.
The error bug started early for the Vikings as three Community errors in the opening inning helped the Eagles to score four runs without the benefit of a hit.
Community (1-2) fought back and cut the deficit in half with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Maki Fleming reached base on an error and stole second and third.
After Drew Harris and Josh Powers walked to load the bases, Luke Davis drove in the first Viking run on a groundout and Isaiah Beech followed with an RBI-single as the Eagles took a 4-2 lead to the second inning.
Eagleville added four runs in the top of the second to take an 8-2 lead before the Vikings came up big in the bottom of the third.
After a Fleming leadoff walk, the Vikings pulled a perfect hit and run as Elijah Westbrooks singled through the vacated hole at short stop.
Harris drove in a run with a single before Beech connected with a double and two RBIs as Community cut the Eagle lead to 8-5.
Four Eagle runs in the fourth increased the Eagleville lead to 12-5 before the Vikings scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
A walk to Harris, followed by consecutive RBI-doubles by Davis and Beech closed the Eagle lead to 12-7.
The Vikings could not get closer as the Eagles used a 3-run sixth inning and a 4-run seventh with the help of four Community errors to widen their lead.
The Vikings had six hits, with Beech collecting three hits and four RBIs.
Kaleb Maillet started on the mound for the Vikings with Thomas Bowling relieving in the fifth.
Community will travel to DeKalb Co. for a 6:30 p.m. game Friday night.
