EAGLEVILLE — The Eagleville Eagles took advantage of excellent field position and big plays to take an early lead against the Community Vikings and the Vikings could not recover as Community lost to the Eagles 42-0 in a non-region contest Friday night.
The Vikings took the opening kickoff, but an Eagle interception on third down gave Eagleville excellent field position at the Community 12.
The Eagles wasted little time before scoring as Marshall Fields reached the end zone on a 12-yard run.
Alex Borombozin added the first of his six extra points as the Eagles led 7-0 with 10:43 remaining in the opening quarter.
After a Viking three-and-out, the Eagles took to the air as Fields hauled in a 47-yard pass from Benton Fox as Eagleville went up 14-0 with 6:46 left.
The same tandem of Fox to Fields worked again on the next Eagle possession as Fox connected with Fields for a 57-yard touchdown pass as Eagleville increased its advantage to 21-0 with 3:12 remaining.
The Eagles added their fourth touchdown on the first play of the second quarter as Fox connected with Kason Puffer for 17 yards as Eagleville went up 28-0.
The Vikings started with better field position on the ensuing possession after a 21-yard kickoff return by Isaac Jacobs, but the Eagle defense was true to the test and held Community in check.
Eagleville responded with another score on the next possession as Jonathan Jordan raced 61 yards for a touchdown as the Eagles ended the half with a 35-0 lead.
Puffer returned the opening kickoff of the second half 69 yards for a touchdown as the Eagles went up 42-0.
Neither team scored the rest of the way as the Eagles took the win.
“It’s just one of the things where we keep hurting ourselves,” Coach Glenn Tidwell of the Vikings said. “Whether it’s just youth, it’s hard to explain.”
“We just keep making silly mistakes and I’ve got to figure out how to fix those, which is the frustrating part,” Tidwell added.
“It’s like I tell them this is a work-in-progress,” Tidwell said. “You’re coming in with a new staff, a new offense, a new defense, and a whole new everything.”
“We’ve just got to get over some humps of not individually doing what we want to do,” Tidwell added.
“They’ve just got to keep mentally into it.”
