From staff reports
The Shelbyville Fire Department is hoping to have a new radio system sometime in the new year.
In a unanimous vote the Shelbyville City Council approved the request by Fire Chief Matt Doak to pursue an Assistance to Firefighters Grant from FEMA through Homeland Security.
This is a 90/10 grant. FEMA would pay $612,146.09 and the City would be responsible for $62,214.61 for a total of $673, 360.70.
The vote by the Council allows Doak to pursue the grant which would have to be signed by Mayor Randy Carroll if it is approved.
The grant would be used to upgrade the radio system. Doak is seeking a P25 TACN Digital Radio System which would allow the City to communicate with the Bedford County Fire Department and county emergency agencies and emergency officials as well as the State.
It would provide interoperability between all agencies which is vital in emergency situations. Interoperability in fire operations is essential for effective emergency management, facilitating seamless coordination and communication between different agencies, technologies, and resources.
