BELL BUCKLE — Community Viqueen Sara Flannagan found the back of the net twice and the stout Purple and Gold back line held strong against a late push by the Webb Lady Feet in a 2-1 win in Tuesday night’s county clash.
While it was Community who was able to bank a second-half goal and provide a defensive stand to keep the Lady Feet scoreless in the second half, Webb broke through after a physical 20 minutes into the match and eighth-grader Dara Frazier scored the match’s first goal in the 24th minute of the match.
Streaking down the right flank, Frazier found the mismatch and fired the open shot to the left post of the goal for the early 1-0 Webb lead.
Although Webb scored early, Community continued to press its attack and held firm control of the possession though much of the first half.
After several near-goals, including three from in the box, Viqueen senior Audrina Bearden had a good look at the goal, but Webb keeper Daria Biriuk came up with swatting save.
But after Biriuk knocked the shot away, Flannagan came through on the back post and played clean up to even the match at one goal apiece in the 31st minute.
Both teams continued pressing the attack into the second half and after a shot sailed by by Bearden in the 58th minute, Webb responded with one of its best runs on goal with a shot that sailed just high on a cross.
Barely a minute later, it was Flannagan again who found the back of the net on what was the game-winner on a breakaway in the 60th minute.
Following the second Viqueen score, Webb flipped a switch and dominated possession through much of the remaining 20 minutes of the match, and had two excellent chances to score off direct kicks by Jayda Frazier, but just wasn’t able to find a second goal against senior Viqueen goal keeper Carlie Blanton.
As time continued to wind down, Webb’s best chance at netting the equalizer came in the 78th minute on a shot by Anne Marie Beard, but Blanton again came through with one key final save and the Viqueens were able to bleed out the remaining clock.
Community will be back on its home field on Friday, hosting the Forrest Lady Rockets for the District 9-A opener, while Webb will travel to BGA on Thursday evening.
