Shelbyville Central used a two-run fifth inning to slip past Community 4-3 on Wednesday, overcoming an early deficit and holding off the Vikings late.
Community jumped out quickly in the top of the first. Josh Powers drove in a run on a groundout, and Isaiah Beech followed with an RBI double down the right-field line to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead.
Shelbyville Central answered with a run in the first and pulled even in the second on a passed ball, making it 2-2.
Community regained the lead in the fifth when Powers delivered an RBI single to put the Vikings back in front, 3-2.
The Golden Eagles responded in the bottom half of the inning. A Community error allowed the tying run to score before Blake Bone lined an RBI single down the right-field line to give Shelbyville Central the lead for good at 4-3.
Braxton Vari earned the win in relief for Shelbyville Central, working six innings and allowing just one run, none earned, on five hits while striking out five. Starter Stephen Bobo gave up two runs over the opening inning.
Community starter Tyler Wood went four innings, allowing two runs, one earned, while striking out four. Wade Haley pitched the final two innings for the Vikings and allowed two unearned runs.
Beech and Powers each had two hits to lead Community at the plate, with both driving in a run. Wes Haley added a triple with Brody Armstrong and Dylan Markum adding hits.
Bone drove in the decisive run for Shelbyville, while Case Davis, Brody Thomas and Miles McCullough accounted for the Golden Eagles’ four hits.
