COALMONT — After Community built a 13-7 lead in the first quarter on Friday night at Grundy County, a sluggish second quarter on the offensive end of the court ultimately allowed the Lady Yellow Jackets to surge to a slim halftime lead and preserve it throughout the second half, beating the Viqueens 53-44.
The name of the game was balanced scoring in the first quarter, as five different Viqueens scored in the opening period.
Alyssa White added a pair of baskets in the paint, while Anna Haskins hit a 3-pointer to help Community build a six-point lead.
But that lead didn’t hold, as Community was held to just four points, while Grundy County rallied to a one-point halftime lead with 11 points in the second.
The lone Viqueen field goal came from White, and Community went just 2-for-4 from the charity stripe in the second.
By halftime, Grundy County led 18-17.
While offenses were relatively sluggish in the second quarter, both teams picked up the steam in the third.
Grundy County spurred its attack from beyond the arc, making four treys in the quarter, with three coming from Gracie Painter.
Anna Haskins answered with a perimeter assault as well, adding eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers, while White continued to assert her will in the paint.
While offenses were able to execute in the half court in the third, the game’s pace ground to a screeching halt in the fourth as the two teams combined for 34 free throw attempts in the quarter.
Grundy County went 10-for-18 attempts, with Elyce Rymer making a perfect 6-of-6 attempts.
Community on the other hand, got 10 points in the quarter from Mattei Maxey, who was a perfect 8-of-8 from the charity stripe.
In the end, Community put three players in double figures, with White’s 14 points being the top mark for the Purple and Gold.
Haskins finished with 13 points, while Maxey finished with 12.
Panter led all scorers with 17 points.
