Shelbyville is gearing up for its most vibrant Juneteenth celebration yet—and the excitement is already buzzing! With three days of music, culture, history, and community, the 2025 Bedford County Juneteenth Celebration promises to be more than just a party—it’s a powerful tribute to freedom, heritage, and unity.

Presented by the Gilliland Historical Resource Center Inc. and the Rosenwald Recreation & Community Center, this year’s celebration carries the theme: “Honoring Our Ancestors.” It’s more than just an event—it’s a heartfelt recognition of those who came before us and a celebration of the strength, culture, and resilience of our community. Whether you’re coming for the food, the festivities, or the fellowship, there’s something for everyone at this family-friendly gathering.

June 19: Juneteenth Coffee & Heritage Walk

The festivities begin on June 19 at the Rosenwald Center (516 Tillman St.) with Juneteenth Coffee from 10 a.m. to noon, setting a reflective and meaningful tone for the days ahead. Guests will be welcomed with a moment of prayer, then an inspiring solo performance by Shirley Dandy. Special guest speaker Dr. Phyllis Washington will share words of wisdom, while Dr. JoAnn Sebastian will speak on the true meaning and history of Juneteenth. Community announcements will be shared, and a heartfelt thank you will be extended to all those who have made this event possible.

Earlier that morning, at 8 a.m., the annual Heritage Historical Walk will set off from H.V. Griffin Park on Massengale Way, guided by Robert Johnson. This walk winds its way through key landmarks of Black heritage in Shelbyville—stopping at Rosenwald on Tillman Street, continuing to Purdy Court, and concluding at the Gilliland Historical Resource Center. This walk isn’t just a stroll through town; it’s a journey through history and a living tribute to generations past. This year’s Grand Marshal, Pastor Jason Scales of Believer’s Faith Fellowship, will lead the way. Community members are encouraged to join the walk, and both vendor booths and creative arts contest entries can still be registered through the event’s website.

June 20: Fish Fry & Family Fun

Day two heats up with a delicious fish fry and family celebration back at the Rosenwald Center from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. This is the perfect day to bring the kids, as the grounds will be filled with fun activities and the joyful buzz of neighbors catching up. As the scent of fried catfish fills the air, guests can also view and participate in the Creative Arts Contest, showcasing talent and imagination from across the county. With great food, creative expression, and family-friendly fun, it’s the perfect summer afternoon.

June 21: Parade, Performances & Community Celebration

The grand finale on June 21 takes place Uptown on the Square (100 Public Square, Shelbyville) and promises to be a celebration to remember. The day kicks off at 10 a.m. with a lively parade, immediately followed by opening ceremonies at 11 a.m. While the town square bustles with energy, local arts and crafts vendors, food booths, and community organizations will line the square from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., offering something for everyone—from handmade goods to local resources and everything in between.

From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., live entertainment will take center stage with performances by the energetic Huntsville Community Drumline Stickers and the always fun Kountry Stars from Tullahoma. Guests can join in on the “Cha Cha Slide” line dance, dedicated in loving memory of William Perry (1965–2023), and experience the powerful performance of “Boots On The Ground.”

The day begins with spiritual reflection, led by Brother Albert Nelson, followed by a prayer from Pastor Nachia Tellis of Woodfork Church. As the community rises in unity, Tamika Coats will perform the Black National Anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” marking a deeply meaningful moment of reverence and pride.

At 1 p.m., the spotlight turns to the Award Ceremonies, where winners of the coloring contest, creative arts entries, and parade participants will be honored. Throughout the day, lucky attendees will also have the chance to win exciting door prizes—so keep your ticket stubs close!

This Juneteenth, Shelbyville invites you to gather, remember, and celebrate together. Let’s lift our voices, honor our ancestors, and make memories that carry forward the spirit of freedom. Bring your lawn chairs, your family, and your joy—this is one celebration you won’t want to miss!
