As featured in Good News Magazine, Detective Lieutenant John Sweeney of the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office describes his calling as one he never expected but wholly embraced: “I didn’t choose this career. Honestly, it chose me.” Sweeney began his law enforcement career as a Corrections Officer in 2011, later serving as a Court/Warrants Officer in 2013, and ultimately transferring to the Patrol Division where his leadership and dedication grew, culminating in his role as Detective Lieutenant.

From corrections to patrol to detective leadership, his journey reflects a deep-rooted passion for building trust and empowering residents. Beyond his professional career, Sweeney is deeply rooted in the Bedford County community. He is an active member of Edgemont Baptist Church, serves as President of the Board for Life Source Family Solutions, and is also a board member of First Choice Pregnancy Center. These roles reflect his dedication not only to public safety but also to strengthening families and supporting community-based solutions. His faith, community service, and leadership roles highlight his dedication to serving Bedford County both in and out of uniform. John is as committed to his family as he is to his church & community. John & his wife have five beautiful children, four amazing grandchildren, large extended family, & numerous supportive siblings & parents. Together, they are dedicated to making our community the best place for not only their family, but for all the families in Bedford County.
