Lady Champs grab 1st district win
STAFF REPORT
COALMONT — A red-hot start was exactly what the doctor ordered for the Cascade Lady Champions in Saturday’s makeup game at Grundy County.
The Lady Champs burst out of the gates on an 18-5 run and held off the Lady Yellowjackets the rest of the way as Cascade picked up its first District 9-AA win of the season, 57-49.
Grundy County managed two baskets in the opening frame, but saw a balanced attack with six Lady Champions scoring in the 18-point first.
The Lady Jackets rallied and outscored Cascade 15-10 in the second period to cut the Lady Champion lead to eight points by halftime.
But Cascade was able to maintain its steady, balanced offense the rest of the way and held on for the eight-point win.
Three Lady Champions hit double figures, with Kaydence Miller leading the way with 16 points.
She hit Cascade’s only 3-pointer in the fourth quarter.
Sophie Ray added the attack in the paint and chipped in 15, while point guard Kaegan Young finished with 12.
