UNIONVILLE —The Community Viqueens were tied with the Summertown Lady Eagles with 3:21 left to play, but a Lady Eagle 14-0 run decided the outcome as the Viqueens fell to Summertown 59-47 in a District 9-2A basketball contest Friday night.
“It was a battle for three and a half quarters, and then we had a lot of layups we did not hit,” Coach Cody Pierce of the Viqueens said.
“The difference was we didn’t hit the layups and they did,” Pierce added.
It was a game of ebbs and flows as each team enjoyed double-digit leads.
With Anna Haskins scoring six points and Alyssa White adding four, Community (9-9, 0-1) scored the first seven points of the game and then went on a 6-0 run after a Lady Eagle basket to take a 13-2 lead with 1:52 left in the opening quarter.  Summertown followed with a 7-0 run of its own as the Viqueens ended the quarter with a 13-9 advantage.
The Lady Eagles scored the first seven points of the second quarter to complete a 14-0 run as Summertown led 16-13 with 5:39 left.  Haskins and Mattie Maxey led the way for the Viqueens with four points each as the lead changed hands six times after the Lady Eagle run.  Summertown ended the half with a 27-25 lead.
The Lady Eagles started with the first seven points of the third quarter to complete a 9-0 run as Summertown led 34-25 with 5:53 remaining.
Haskins scored eight points in the quarter as the Viqueens went on an 8-0 run to cut the Lady Eagle lead to 34-33 with 3:20 left.  A basket by Morgan Pridmore with eight seconds left gave Community a 40-38 lead with one quarter to play.
Summertown took a 45-41 lead with 4:15 left before two straight field goals by Haskins tied the game at 45-45.
From there, the Lady Eagles could not miss from the field and the foul line while the Viqueens had trouble finding the basket as Summertown took its 14-point lead before a late Viqueen basket cut the Lady Eagle margin of victory to 12.
Ella Busby led the Lady Eagles with 28 points.
Haskins led the Viqueens with 23 points.
Summertown was an impressive 21-of-23 at the charity stripe while the Viqueens were 12-of-18.
“They’re a good team and number 3’s a winner (Busby),” Pierce said.  “She made the plays in the end and we didn’t.”
