UNIONVILLE — The Community Viqueens used a 15-point third quarter to cut into their deficit against the Macon County Tigerettes, but the well ran dry for the Viqueens in the fourth quarter as the Tigerettes pulled away for a 51-38 victory in a basketball contest Friday night.
Alyssa White scored the first four points of the game as Community (3-9) took the early lead.
The Tigerettes tied the game in a low-scoring first quarter and scored the final five points to take an 11-6 lead to the second quarter.
The Viqueens increased their point total to 11 in the quarter as Anna Haskins scored five points while White added four, but Macon County kept the pressure on and increased its lead to 25-17 at the intermission.
With Haskins nailing two treys and scoring eight points in the third quarter, the Viqueens cut the Tigerette lead to 27-25 with 5:11 remaining before Macon County increased its advantage to 38-32 with one quarter to play.
“We hit some big shots early in the quarter, but after that we didn’t execute enough on offense,” Coach Cody Pierce of the Viqueens said.
The Tigerettes controlled the tempo in the quarter with their lead as the Viqueens had trouble finding the basket.
White scored all six Community points as the Viqueens could only manage two points in the last five minutes while Macon County went on a 10-0 run to put the game away.
“Macon County held their lead and in the fourth quarter they hit some big 3’s,” Pierce said.
“Overall it was a good effort, but we didn’t make enough plays on offense.”
“Every night we’re in the games, we’re looking for those big plays to put some pressure on the other team,” Pierce added. “Once we find those big plays, we’ll start winning some ballgames.”
Laityn Kirby scored 13 points and Natalie Green had 11 to lead the Tigerettes.
White led the Viqueens with 16 points while Haskins added 13.
The Tigerettes were 8-of-13 at the free throw line while the Viqueens were 6-of-9.
