The Town of Normandy has joined the nationwide movement toward sustainability by participating in the NexTrex Community Recycling Challenge—an initiative that rewards eco-conscious efforts with lasting, tangible benefits.

Trex Company, a leader in eco-friendly outdoor living products, has launched a new, streamlined version of its NexTrex Community Recycling Challenge to make plastic film recycling easier and more accessible. Built on a legacy of sustainability, Trex manufactures its world-famous composite decking from 95% recycled materials, including plastic film sourced from everyday items like shopping bags and newspaper sleeves. The revamped program encourages schools and community organizations to collect at least 1,000 pounds of plastic film in a 12-month period in exchange for a “Trex Outdoor Furniture bench”—offering a simple, rewarding way to help reduce plastic waste and promote greener communities.

To qualify for the NexTrex Community Recycling Challenge, participating organizations must collect a minimum of 1,000 pounds of qualifying polyethylene (PE) plastic film within a 12-month period. Organizations can begin their collection at any time and must report totals through the My Trex Portal at my.trex.com. Accepted materials include everyday plastic items such as grocery and shopping bags, bread and sandwich bags, case overwrap, newspaper sleeves, ice bags, and dry cleaning bags—essentially clean, dry, and stretchable PE film. Once collected, the plastic film must be delivered to a participating retailer for recycling. Trex provides up to three collection bins and promotional materials to support participants. Groups that meet the collection goal will receive a composite bench from the “Trex Outdoor Furniture Collection” as a reward for their recycling efforts.

The Town of Normandy proudly completed the NexTrex Community Recycling Challenge and is now the recipient of a durable and stylish composite bench from the “Trex Outdoor Furniture Collection.” Town officials commend the bench’s quality and design, and encourage residents to continue supporting the initiative by dropping off eligible plastic film at Town Hall. Their ongoing participation helps divert plastic waste from landfills while contributing to a greener, more sustainable community.
