After 36 remarkable years in education, including 24 years in Bedford County Schools (BCS) and 12 years as principal of Community Middle School, Principal Tony Garrette is officially retiring at the end of this school year. With gratitude, the BCS community bids farewell to a leader whose passion and commitment have shaped generations of students and staff.

“Mr. Garrette has been a dedicated leader whose passion for education and unwavering support for students and staff have made a lasting impact on the school community and system,” commented Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tammy Garrett. “His enthusiasm and commitment to excellence have set a strong example, and he leaves behind a legacy of integrity, compassion and student-centered leadership. We are deeply grateful for his years of service and wish him the very best in retirement. He is a true Viking for life!”

Throughout his distinguished career, Principal Garrette has been more than an administrator—he has been a champion for student success, a fierce advocate for staff, and a pillar of the Community Schools model. His leadership has left an indelible mark not only on Community Middle School, but on the broader educational landscape in Unionville.

“From day one, my goal has always been to do what’s best for students,” Garrette said. “The decisions I’ve made have been grounded in this and how we can best support our staff to help students through strong, united schools.”

Known for his open-door policy, calm demeanor under pressure and a belief in the potential of every learner, Garrette has fostered a family atmosphere with staff and a school culture rooted in respect, collaboration and high expectations. Here’s a sampling of the many comments shared by his school’s colleagues.

“It has been a true honor to work under your leadership the past 12 years,” said Instructional

Coach Kelly Beasley. “You have been much more than a principal; you’ve been a mentor, a steady guide and an example of what calm, consistent and passionate leadership looks like. Thank you for believing in me, challenging me to grow and setting a standard that I will always strive to meet. Your impact will continue to ripple through the halls of Community Middle for years to come.”

CDC Teacher Christle Price thanked Garrette for his support of teachers’ unique skills. “Your love and care for the students and staff at CMS is immeasurable! I also appreciate you trusting us as teachers and giving us the space to do our jobs and do them well.”

School Counselor Shelby Adams said her principal makes people laugh, even on their bad days. “He is always a smiling face and there to answer any questions or talk to any students I bring his way. The students love him!”

“Working together for 12 years, Mr. Garrette is the principal I’ve had the longest,” remarked Related Arts Teacher Cynthia Donnelly. “Your patience, kindness and sense of humor have made a significant impact on my professional journey.”

As he steps into retirement, Mr. Garrette leaves behind a legacy of excellence, compassion and vision. Though he will be missed in the halls of Community Middle School, the seeds he has planted through decades of service will continue to grow and flourish.

“When I walked into Community School in the fall of 2002, it did not take me long to understand what a special place it was,” said Garrette. “A lot of places talk about being a family and supporting one another, but I found the place that truly embodies that concept and lives it out. The Community Schools are special places with special people that I will call my friends forever. Go, Vikings!”
