Rachel Marie Miller, a cherished mother, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2024, in Shelbyville. Born on Jan. 2, 1937, in Marshall County, Rachel’s warmth and kindness touched all who knew her throughout her 87 years.
Rachel was the beloved daughter of the late Ernest P. Hilliard and Leslie Nelson Hilliard. She was the devoted wife of the late Melvin Miller, with whom she shared a life full of love and companionship. Rachel was also the caring sister to Frances, Dottie, Lois, Geneva, Ruth, Joe, Bill, Howell, and Don Hilliard, all of whom preceded her in death.
She is survived by her loving son, Dale Miller, and her eight nieces and nephews, who will forever cherish the memories and the legacy of love she leaves behind.
Rachel spent many years as a dedicated housekeeper at the Bedford County Medical Center. She was a woman who took pride in her work and the connections she made through her role at the medical center.
Her interests were a reflection of her joyous spirit and love for life. Rachel found great pleasure in traveling with her son to the mountains and the beach, where they created countless treasured moments. She had a passion for crossword puzzles, an activity that not only brought her joy but also kept her mind sharp. Rachel had a love for the outdoors and could often be found taking serene walks, appreciating the beauty of nature.
Rachel will be remembered as a loving, kind, and friendly soul. Her compassionate nature and the sincere interest she took in others’ lives earned her the affection and respect of many.
Visitation will be Friday, March 22, from 4 – 8 p.m. at Gowen-Smith Chapel, 850 Union Street, in Shelbyville. Service will be Saturday, March 23, at 1 p.m. She will be laid to rest at Whitworth Cemetery, 11678 New Zion Rd., in Christiana.
