Like many of the county’s spring sports teams, it’s been a stretch of inconsistent matches with weather and spring break playing a factor.
But unlike many of the other county teams, the two Shelbyville Central tennis teams hit the court on Wednesday afternoon, beat the weather and took a pair of matches against Coffee County.
Both the Eagles and Eaglettes took 6-1 wins against Coffee County.
The Eaglettes were dominant in their wins, nearly sweeping singles matches against the Red Raiders.
Caitlin Burdick was the only loss for Shelbyville, despite a hard-fought 8-5 final score in the No. 1 singles match.
Ryan Samons also had another hard-fought match in the No. 4 slot, but emerged with an 8-6 win over Madalyn Black.
Sophie Ray won her No. 2 match in convincing fashion, defeating Braydin Tomberlin 8-3, while Alyssa Fanning and Belle Barber won, 8-1 and 8-0, respectively.
In doubles, it was two more convincing wins for the Eaglettes, with the No. 1 doubles duo of Burdick and Ray winning 8-4, while Fanning and Samons picked up an 8-3 win.
For the Eagles, it was also a convincing final score, but the individual match scores featured all-out battles on the court.
No. 1 singles seed Henry stone edged out an 8-6 win, while Justin Spence and Jackson Benson took 8-5 wins in the No. 2 and 3 spots, respectively.
Hoyt Wessner fell, despite a stellar effort in an 8-4 final score in the No. 4 singles match, while No. 5 Tucker Johnson also won a brutally close fight, 8-6.
In doubles, Stone and Spence outlasted their opponents, 9-7 as well.
