UNIONVILLE — A slow start for the Community Viqueens ultimately proved their undoing at home on Friday night against Macon County.
The Lady Tigers’ offense wasn’t overly impressive, but piled up just enough to escape Unionville with a 49-44 win over Community.
In the first quarter, Macon County spread 11 points among five players, while limiting the Viqueens to just one field goal.
That lone shot from the floor came courtesy of Taylar Wessner, while Mattie Maxey went to the line and was 1-for-2 in the period.
Although trailing by eight, Community was able to get the offense going and relied on Brookelyn Yoes’ attack in the paint, where she was able to draw a handful of fouls.
In the second, she went to the line and shot 3-for-4 attempts at the line.
Still, Macon County was able to outscore Community 15-12 in the quarter and held a 26-15 lead at the break.
The offense continued to trickle into a steady flow into the second half.
Yoes stepped into a pair of 3-pointers and Alyssa White scored a pair of baskets as well as Community out-scored the visitors 15-14 in the quarter, yet still trailed 40-29.
That margin became even narrower in the fourth, with Community holding the Lady Tigers to just nine points.
Maxey again continued to fight her way to the free throw line and continued to make Macon County pay for the fouls, going 4-for-4 in the quarter at the stripe.
Despite going on a 14-9 run in the fourth, Community wasn’t able to overcome the first-quarter deficit and took the five-point loss.
Macon County’s Chloe Solomon was the lone player for either team to hit double figures and finished with 10 points, while Community had three knocking on the door of double digits in the scoring column.
Maxey, Yoes and White each tallied nine points in the loss, while Savannah Pearson finished with eight.
As a team, Community finished 11-of-14 from the line. ?
