UNIONVILLE — Abbi Storey drilled a seventh-inning 3-run homer to break a 6-6 tie as the Cornersville Lady Bulldogs scored in the final five innings to come from behind and defeat the Community Viqueens 9-6 in a non-district softball contest Friday night.
It was the Viqueens who got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the bottom of the first. After Anna Haskins doubled to reach base, Taylar Wessner drilled a pitch over the right field fence to give Community an early 2-0 lead.
The Lady Bulldogs used a clutch two-out hit by Jayli Childress in the top of the third inning to drive in Zoe Blackwell, who had doubled with one out as Cornersville cut the Viqueen lead to 2-1.
The Viqueens got the run right back in the bottom of the third as Haskins reached base on an infield hit and scored on a Lady Bulldog error as Community went up 3-1.
Cornersville used some small ball to score two runs and tie the game in the top of the fourth.
After Storey singled and Emma Ward doubled to put runners in scoring position with none out, Carmen Ward laid down a sacrifice bunt to score one run.
With the go-ahead runner advancing to third, a groundout by Alex Cardin scored the second run of the inning and tied the game at 3-3.
The Lady Bulldogs took their first lead of the game in the top of the fifth as Anna Wood connected for a solo homer to give Cornersville a 4-3 advantage.
After a leadoff walk to Storey to lead off the top of the sixth, an Emma Wood double and a Viqueen error put Cornersville up 5-3.
After another sacrifice by Carmen Ward, Cardin doubled to score a run and give the Lady Bulldogs a 6-3 lead.
The Viqueens bounced back by batting around and tying the game in the bottom of the sixth.
Haylee Webb led off with a single and a Lady Bulldog error put two Community runners on base.
McKenzie Tucker followed with an RBI-single to cut the Lady Bulldog lead to 6-4. After a popout, a single by Annie Prince kept the uprising going. Kailani Allen drove in a run on a fielder’s choice and Haskins singled to drive in a run and knot the game at 6-6.
The Viqueens were primed to take the lead with the bases loaded and one out, but pitcher Carmen Ward reached back and struck out two Viqueens to keep the game tied going to the seventh.
Singles by Blackwell and Childress put two Lady Bulldogs on base with one out, setting the stage for Storey’s theatrics.
Storey followed with a liner that cleared the left field fence and gave Cornersville a 3-run lead.
The Viqueens went down in order as the Lady Bulldogs finished with the win in a game that took 1 hour and 51 minutes to play.
Storey was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a walk to lead the Lady Bulldog 11-hit attack.
The Viqueens had eight hits, with three safeties by Haskins leading the way.
Carmen Ward went the distance on the mound for the Lady Bulldogs with Prince pitching a complete game for the Viqueens.
