UNIONVILLE – The Community Viqueens used a hot first half to take a big lead at the intermission and the Viqueens maintained their advantage in the second half en route to a 55-39 win over the Forrest Lady Rockets in a District 9-AA contest Friday night.
Alyssa White, Taylar Wessner, and Anna Haskins combined for all 22 first-quarter points as Community (8-15, 3-2) took the early lead.
White had eight points from the paint as the Viqueens used a 10-0 run to take a 14-4 lead with 3:38 left in the opening quarter.
The Viqueens also had success from the outside as Wessner netted nine points and Haskins had five.
Community finished 7-of-8 from the free throw line in the quarter and took a 22-11 lead to the second quarter.
“We come out and wanted to play with a lot of energy and create some offense by putting a lot of pressure on them,” Coach Cody Pierce of the Viqueens said.
White and Brooklyn Yoes each had four points as the Viqueens kept up the pressure in the quarter.
The Lady Rockets could only manage eight points as the Viqueens scored 13 and took a 35-19 lead at the half.
Both teams had trouble finding the basket in the third quarter.
The Viqueens could only manage five points, but the Community defense held the Lady Rockets to five points as the Viqueens took a 40-24 lead to the final quarter.
“We came out and flattened out in the third quarter like we did against Cannon County, so we’ve got to get that fixed,” Pierce said.
“We’ve got to find a way for four quarters where we’re the ones putting pressure on the other team on both ends of the court,” Pierce added.
White had eight points and the Viqueens connected on seven free throws to maintain their advantage in the quarter.
Community was never threatened as the Viqueens took their third district win of the season.
“We were doing a good job finding the open person,” Pierce said. “Some players were willing to pass up a shot to get a better shot.”
“That’s what you love to see right now going into February and March,” Pierce added.
White had 22 points to lead the Viqueens.
Wessner finished with 13 points while Haskins had 10.
Cadence Chapman had 14 points to lead Forrest while Kinslee Inlow added 10.
The Viqueens were 15-of-20 at the foul line while the Lady Rockets were 3-of-9.
Community finishes regular season play with three district games, starting with a game at Cannon County Monday night.
Game time is 6 p.m.
