UNIONVILLE — For 24 minutes, the Community Viqueens played on even terms with the district-leading Cannon County Lionettes in a District 9-AA matchup Wednesday night.
But the third quarter turned out to be a nightmare as Cannon County turned numerous Viqueen turnovers into baskets as Community fell 57-43.
Anna Haskins paced the Viqueens with six points in the opening quarter as the lead changed hands four times.
A 6-0 run to end the quarter gave the Lionettes a 14-10 lead heading to the second quarter.
Brooklyn Yoes of the Viqueens nailed two treys in the quarter as Community (7-15, 2-2) got within two before a 5-0 Cannon County run gave the Lionettes a 25-18 lead with 3:13 left.
It was all the points the Lionettes would score in the half as the Viqueens closed out the quarter with the final seven points to tie the game at 25-25 heading to the intermission.
With turnovers plaguing the Viqueens in the third quarter, the Lionettes took advantage and increased their lead.
Cannon County went on a 6-0 run and scored seven consecutive points on two occasions to take a 45-31 lead to the final quarter.
Haskins scored six points and Yoes added five in the quarter as the Viqueens righted their offense, but it was too little, too late as the Lionettes took the win.
Abbilyn Teter had 22 points to lead three Lionettes in double figures.  Norah Walkup had 12 points while Jenna Bush added 11.
Haskins had 15 points and Yoes added 13 to lead the Viqueens.
