Vikings can’t cut into deficit in district loss to Lions

UNIONVILLE — The Cannon County Lions outscored the Community Vikings by small margins in each of the four quarters as the Lions gradually increased their advantage and ended with a 75-58 win over the Vikings in a District 9-2A contest Tuesday night.
With Landon Lovvorn scoring six points, the Vikings led early before the Lions took the lead for good at the 2:39 mark.
Cannon County ended the first quarter with a 14-10 lead.
Charles Haskins had six points while Lovvorn, Jaxson Williams and Austin Stickler each had treys as the Vikings stayed close for most of the second quarter.
Stickler went outside and connected on a three-pointer to tie the game at 25-25 with 2:03 left before the Lions went on a 7-0 run to take a 32-25 lead.
Haskins connected on a field goal to shrink the Lion lead before a Cannon County 3-pointer at the buzzer gave the Lions a 35-27 lead at the intermission.

ns 42-37 with 2:41 left.
But another run, this one netting the Lions nine consecutive points gave Cannon County a 51-37 lead.
The Lions ended the quarter with a 51-40 advantage.
Despite nine points from Lovvorn, including two treys with about two minutes left which cut the Lion lead to 11, the Vikings could never get within single digits in the fourth quarter as Cannon County scored nine consecutive points in the final two minutes to put the game away.
Three Lions finished in double figures with Miles Alexander leading the way with 21 points.
Antonio Jones added 18 points while Lukas Phillips had 16.
The Vikings also had three players in double digits.
Lovvorn had 18 points to lead the Vikings while Haskins had 16 and Stickler added 11.
In addition to connecting on 11 treys, Cannon County was 10-of-13 at the charity stripe while the Vikings had eight three-pointers and were 4-of-11 at the line.
Community travels to Grundy County for a district matchup Friday night.
