CHAPEL HILL — Freshman Kaleb Maillet did what he could to limit the effectiveness of a powerful Forrest Rocket lineup.
But Forrest starter Preston Gentry held the Vikings to just one hit and the Rockets were able to hold on for the 3-0 District 9-AA win on Monday night.
Maillet found himself in a quality pitcher’s duel against Gentry, who has proven to be one of the top pitchers in the mid-state this season.
Maillet went the distance for Community, giving up eight hits, but minimizing the damage to just three runs to go with two strikeouts.
All three Rocket runs came in the bottom of the third off a RBI single from Brennan Mealer and a two RBI single from Kason Fuller. Other than that, Maillet kept the Vikings a shot.
But while Maillet was effective, Gentry put on a show on the mound, pitching an efficient seven innings of one-hit baseball, while striking out 11 and walking just one.
Community’s only hit came in the top of the third inning on a single from designated hitter Case Davis.
