Vikes overcome Tigers’ hot start for 2nd straight win

LAFAYETTE — Macon County had as good of a start as the Tigers could have wanted on Friday night against Community.
But it’s not how you start a game that is the most important.
The Vikings overcame the Tigers’ 19-point first quarter and rallied past Macon County for the 49-39 win, marking the second-straight win for Community.
Brady Driver and Cason Gregory combined for 11 of the Tigers’ 19 first-quarter points.
But Community never felt out of striking distance, with Landon Lovvorn chipping in nine of his game-high 21 points in the first frame, including a key 3-pointer.
Still, Macon County held onto a 19-14 lead over the Vikings.
The difference came during a 12-3 run in the second quarter that allowed the Purple and Gold rally to tie the game at 26 by halftime.
Maki Fleming got loose for six points in the quarter and Lovvorn knocked down another 3-pointer.
Macon County took advantage of a sluggish third quarter and outscored the Vikings 11-8 to retake the three-point lead by the end of the third.
But in the fourth, Lovvorn knocked down a pair of timely 3-pointers and aded eight more points as the Vikings went on a 15-2 tear, with Gregory accounting for Macon County’s only field goal of the quarter.
In total, Lovvorn led all scorers with 21 points, with Fleming chipping in 13.
Driver led the home team with 11.
As a team, Community connected on six 3-pointers, with Lovvorn making good on four.
Community continues its stretch of five-straight road games on Tuesday night at Richland.
The Vikings close the week with a game at Central Magnet on Thursday and finally returns home to face Macon County on Friday.
