UNIONVILLE — The Community Vikings have turned into a scoring juggernaut their last two games by scoring 94 and 78 points in district wins over Forrest and top-seeded Cannon County.
Thursday night, the Vikings continued their torrid pace on offense while holding the Grundy County Yellow Jackets to under 50 points as the Vikings defeated the Yellow Jackets 73-49 in a District 9-AA contest on Senior Night.
“Our guys are really starting to get what we want on offense,” Coach Robbie Davis of the Vikings said.  “We did another good job of attaching the backer and taking 10-foot and in shots and using the glass.”
Landon Lovvorn drilled home 31 points as Community (12-13, 4-3) never trailed.
Lovvorn connected for 10 points in the opening quarter while Austin Stickler added eight as the Vikings steadily increased their lead.
Community took a 24-15 lead to the second quarter.
It was Lovvorn adding seven points in the quarter as the Vikings kept the pressure on.
Community finished an 11-0 run by scoring the first seven points of the quarter and took a 38-23 advantage into the intermission.
Lovvorn added 10 points in the third quarter while Landon Berman had six as the Vikings outscored Grundy County 20-14 and took a 58-37 lead to the final quarter.
With Lovvorn and Nyles Barnett adding four points, the Vikings took a 67-43 lead with 3:49 remaining in the game before handing over the reins to their bench.
Community took its biggest lead at 73-46 before settling on the 24-point win.
“We knew we had to make every opportunity we had count because Grundy is a team that will play you for 32 minutes no matter what the score,” Davis said.
“(Sam) Parson is one of the best basketball players in the state in any classification so being able to keep that great a scoring offense under 50 was a good job by all our guys by knowing the game plan and executing it,” Davis added.
Stickler had 12 points and Berman had 11 to join Lovvorn in double figures for the Vikings.
Parson led the Yellow Jackets with 15 points.
The Vikings were 9-of-15 at the free throw line while the Yellow Jackets were 8-of-13.
Maki Fleming, Judd O’Neal, Gunnar McGowan, and Hunter Hill went out victorious on Senior Night for the Vikings.
“With all the cancellations and things, we had to move Senior Night to a district game, but all the seniors were able to get in so that’s huge,” Davis said.
Community finishes the back-to-back along with the regular season and district schedule by traveling to Grundy County Friday night.
Game time is 7:30 p.m.
