UNIONVILLE — On Senior Night, the Community Vikings started out energized on offense and came out strong on defense against the Sequatchie County Indians, but turnovers and missed tackles turned the tide as the Indians took control and defeated the Vikings 51-0 in a Region 4-3A football game Friday night.
After starting the first possession of the game on its own 35, Community (0-9. 0-4) used the running of Mason Bogle and the passing of Kaeden Hensel to two first downs on its drive.
Bogle had rushes of nine and eight yards while Kaeden connected with Gunner Harden on a 12-yard pass play as the Vikings moved to the Indian 31.
But on fourth down, Community came up one yard short of the first down as Sequatchie County took possession.
The Vikings forced four third-down plays on the Indian possession, but Sequatchie County (6-2, 4-0) was able to move the sticks and scored as Hunter Minton found Gowan Brown for a 10-yard touchdown.
The extra point by Holden Armstrong gave the Indians a 7-0 lead with 1:47 left in the opening quarter.
“The defense fed off the way the offense started,” Coach Glenn Tidwell of the Vikings said. “But we started kicking ourselves in the foot again.”
“On defense, you’re a fingertip away from knocking a touchdown pass down and maybe they kick a field goal,” Tidwell added.
The momentum swung in a big way on the next possession as Kason Hicks of the Indians intercepted a Viking pass and ran 27 yards to pay dirt as Sequatchie County ended the quarter with a 15-0 lead.
Despite a 45-yard punt by Community’s Jarrett Yancey, the Indian offense got into high gear in the second quarter.
The combination of Minton to Brown worked again for two more touchdowns while a 4-yard run by Minton added another touchdown as Sequatchie County went into the intermission with a 37-0 advantage.
The Indians added two touchdowns in the second half to end the scoring on the night.
“I’m not disappointed in our effort,” Tidwell said.  “We played with a lot of aggressiveness and were physical.  We’ve just got to finish tackles.”
Community is off next work before concluding regular season play with a region contest at intra-county rival Cascade on October 31.
“We’ll have a little bit of a break,” Tidwell said. “We’re beat up and have lots of bumps and bruises and we’ll get ourselves in the training room this week and get things done.”
