The Community Vikings (1-2) scratched out just enough offense and received a strong effort on the mound Friday night, defeating Moore Co. 3-1 to give first-year head coach Parker Gunn his first career victory.
In a game where runs were hard to come by, Community leaned on solid pitching and timely hitting to secure the win. Moore Co. struck first in the bottom of the opening inning when Kohlby Williams reached on a fielder’s choice that allowed a run to score, giving the Raiders an early 1-0 lead.
Community answered in the second inning to even the score. Masyn Hill drove in the tying run with a groundout, knotting the game at 1-1.
The Vikings took control in the fifth inning. An error by Moore Co. allowed one run to cross the plate, and Wes Haley followed with an RBI single down the right field line to give Community a 3-1 advantage.
That was more than enough support for Community starter Tyler Wood, who turned in a strong outing on the mound. Wood worked five innings, allowing just one hit and one run while striking out eight and walking two.
Maddox Thompson came on in relief and helped secure the victory, tossing 1⅔ scoreless innings while allowing two hits with one strikeout and two walks.
Wes Haley got the last out to preserve the win for the Vikings.
Community finished with nine hits on the night. Dylan Markum led the Vikings at the plate, going 3-for-4. Isaiah Beech added two hits, including a triple, with a run scored. Haley went 1-4 with a RBI. Brody Armstrong was 1-4 with a run scored. Wood went 1-2 with a walk and run scored and Logan Reed added a single for the Vikings.
Moore Co. managed just three hits in the contest, with Cole Taylor, Kohlby Williams, and Jace Deal each collecting one hit.
The Vikings return to action at home Saturday when they face Eagleville. Game time is set at 11 a.m.
