WOODBURY — In the past two games, the Community Vikings (11-13, 3-3) have put forth their best offensive outings of the season.
While both went down as District 9-AA wins, the biggest win of the season came on Monday night, with the Vikings stunning Cannon County (18-7, 6-1), 78-63, who was previously unbeaten in the district.
With two games to go in the regular season, the Purple and Gold is poised for a strong finish heading into next week’s district tournament.
Just six Vikings found their name in the scoring column on Monday night, but three went for double digits.
Of those three, Landon Lovvorn and Austin Stickler combined for 46 to lead the Vikes.
Community held a slim, 14-12 lead after the first, but saw Cannon County rally behind Demaurion Locke’s eight points in the second frame to take a 30-29 lead by halftime.
That halftime lead didn’t last long as Community spread its offense among its six scorers in the third and went for 23 points out of halftime.
Austin Stickler totaled six of his game-high 26 points in the third, while Maki Fleming, Jaxon Williams and Landon Lovvorn all hit shots from the perimeter.
Stickler continued his hot shooting and went on a fourth-quarter tear, adding 11 more points to lead the Vikings in the 27-point fourth to slam the door shut on Cannon County’s perfect district record.
Community connected on six 3-pointers in the win, with Lovvorn hitting three and Fleming adding two more.
The win signifies the Vikings’ strong push to finish the regular season on a high note, having won three of their last four games.
The win put Community back at .500 in the district standings and sets up two key matchups against Grundy County on Thursday and Friday.
