GULF SHORES, Ala. — After a busy week in the Gulf Shores Coast Classic, the Community Viqueens closed their run in the tournament on a high note, crushing Glencoe (Ala.) 9-1.
It was as flawless of a game as the Purple and Gold could have hoped for, out-hitting Glencoe 12-4 and getting a gem of an outing from sophomore starting pitcher Annie Prince.
Prince spun a gem, pitching all five innings and allowing just one run on one hit. She also struck out nine and didn’t issue a walk.
The Viqueen battery backed her strong start with plenty of offense, highlighted by Gracie Daniels, who slugged a pair of doubles and Anna Haskins, who connected on a double and a triple.
Community wasted no time jumping out to a big lead, knocking in five runs in the bottom of the first.
Daniel smacked the first of her two doubles and scored the first run before Taylar Wessner laced a single to right for another RBI.
Another run scored when Wessner scampered home on a Glencoe error before another error scored a fourth Community run of the inning.
Kailani Allen added a fifth Viqueen run on a RBI single as well.
From there, it was cruise control for the Purple and Gold, despite giving up a single run on a solo homer in the top of the second.
Community added another run in the bottom of the second and three more in the fourth.
Haskins, Daniel, Wessner, McKenzie Tucker and Allen all went 2-for-3 in the win.
The Viqueens get the remainder of the week off before returning home on April 2 and diving back into District 9-AA play against Grundy County.
First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m. in Unionville.
