UNIONVILLE – The Community Viqueens pulled away from the Huntland Lady Hornets with a 15-0 second-quarter run and the Viqueens never looked back as Community defeated the Lady Hornets 73-45 in a non-district basketball contest Friday night.
Community (9-7) never trailed in the game but stayed close to the Lady Hornets in the opening quarter.
Anna Haskins led the way for the Viqueens with five points as Community took an 11-8 lead to the second quarter.
The Viqueens led 14-13 with 6:43 left in the quarter before starting their run.  With Sara Flannagan scoring seven points and Savannah Pearson adding five, Community scored the last 15 points and took a 29-13 advantage into the intermission.
The Viqueens scored the first two points of the third quarter to make it 17 straight points before the Lady Hornets broke the ice with 7:28 remaining.  Community picked right back up with an 11-0 run to take a 42-15 lead with 4:11 left.
Huntland closed the margin slightly with seven straight points, but Haskins led the way with three treys and 11 points while Alyssa White added five as the Viqueens led 49-26 heading to the final quarter.
White had six points and Haskins added five as seven Viqueens scored in the quarter.
Community took its biggest lead at 71-38 with 1:51 remaining before settling on the 28-point final winning margin.
Haskins had 24 points including six treys while White added 13 to lead the Viqueens.
Riley Maxwell scored 15 points to lead the Lady Hornets.
The Viqueens finished with nine three-pointers and were 6-of-8 at the free throw line while Huntland had three treys and was 10-of-17 at the charity stripe.
Despite playing three straight games earlier in the week in Gatlinburg, the Viqueens showed no signs of slowing down in their win.
“We played a lot of basketball this week,” Coach Cody Pierce of the Viqueens said.
“We got back Wednesday night and we took yesterday off because it’s been a long three days in Gatlinburg.”
“We came back in today and worked on a lot of stuff,” Pierce added.  “A lot of stuff we worked on we fixed and we looked much better tonight.”
“We shot it well outside and the inside game was a lot more consistent tonight,” Pierce said. “That’s what we’re looking for.”
