COOKEVILLE — When the Webb School won its third-straight state championship a year ago, the Lady Feet were forced to move up in classification for the 2023-2024 season.
While many thought the move might spell disaster for Webb’s postseason hopes, the Lady Feet (15-9) put those worries to rest by qualifying for the Div. II Class 2A state tournament.
While Webb was in cruise control for the first three quarters against Knoxville Webb, the Lady Spartans (20-8) rallied for 19 points in the fourth quarter to deny the Lady Feet a shot a four-peat state championship.
Knoxville Webb punched its ticket to the Div. II Class 2A state title with a 48-41 win over the Lady Feet.
Webb built a 10-point lead in the first quarter and scored as many as eight-straight before the Lady Spartans rallied to cut the Lady Feet lead to five by the end of the quarter.
Makynli Bacon and Kora Johnson combined for nine points to lead Webb early on.
In the second quarter however, Knoxville Webb rallied and matched the Webb School’s 12 points.
By halftime, the Webb School still held a 26-21 lead over the Lady Spartans.
That trend continued through the third quarter and it wasn’t until Meeyah Green took over in the fourth that the game began to turn in favor of the Lady Spartans.
Knoxville Webb’s sharp-shooting guard went for 11 points, going 4-of-4 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the free throw line.
While Knoxville Webb’s offense steamed forward, the Webb School struggled to connect on baskets and went just 1-of-10 from the floor as part of its six-point quarter.
Johnson led the Lady Feet with 16 points on 4-of-6 shooting and was the only member of the Lady Feet to reach double figures.
Green went for a game-high 27 points, while Kyndall Mays added 16.
While Knoxville Webb was able to skate past the Lady Feet, the Lady Spartans ran into a buzzsaw against cross-town rival Knoxville Catholic.
In the Div. II Class 2A state championship, Catholic took the title with a 56-39 win over the Lady Spartans.
