UNIONVILLE — A massive second quarter sparked the Community Viqueens past the visiting Forrest Lady Rockets in Friday night’s District 9-2A tilt.
Community’s Alyssa White went for a team-high 19 points and the Viqueens secured the much-needed 56-41 win over the Lady Rockets.
The first half was extremely competitive and saw nine lead changes between the Viqueens and Lady Rockets until Alyssa White was fouled and hit the basket to break the 16-16 deadlock with 6:25 left in the first half.
From there, the Viqueens closed the second period on an 11-3 run to build a 34-24 lead by halftime.
Community continued to expose the mismatches in the paint and played through White off the low post, who scored 11 of her team-high 19 points in the second quarter.
The mismatch inside the arc gave the Viqueens a decided advantage in the half court defense, forcing Forrest to rely on its perimeter game.
That perimeter attack only held for so long, with Forrest sinking six first-half treys, compared to just two baskets inside the arc.
It was more of the same in the second half for the Purple and Gold, who was able to again feed the ball to White in the low post, but sprinkle in a handful of baskets from the arc, courtesy of Brooklyn Yoes and Taylar Wessner.
In the third frame, Forrest made things interesting with back-to-back 3-pointers by Sadie Smith and Kinslee Inlow to cut the Viqueen lead to four points with 6:09 remaining in the period, but Community answered with a 12-0 run to again seize total control of the game and bump the lead to 16 points by the start of the fourth.
In the fourth, Community held Forrest to just four made field goals and was able to secure the needed District 9-2A win.
In addition to White’s 19, Yoes chipped in 11, with three made 3-pointers in the win.
Inlow led all scorers with 24 points, including six 3-pointers.
